Newtonian Reflector Telescope

Commercial grade telescopes are very popular among public as a hobby. Astronomy observations are also becoming popular among the tourism industry (Astro tourism). However, these types of telescopes are not widely available in the market in Sri Lanka. Currently there is no production of telescopes in Sri Lanka. As a team we have developed an innovative technology to manufacture parabolic mirrors in our research labs. This will overcome the major barrier for manufacturing optical telescopes. Mirror grinding process is tested and kept as a trade secret as it is unique to the team. The research team presented the research findings to a company who is also a leading telescope importer in Sri Lanka. They agreed to work with the university to develop and commercialize the product. The team is closely working with UBL for the final phase of commercialization. Success of this product will lead to produce amateur telescope under in Sri Lanka label. While this will fulfil the existing gap in the market for these kinds of products it will also support the economy of Sri Lanka.

Vital Sense Monitor

Fully Autonomous All- Sky Camera

Since the invention of digital cameras, electronic units of cameras have been used as surveillance equipment with a variety of optical devices. With the development of wide-field optics, use of the digital cameras for obtaining data from a large field of view has grown rapidly. These types of wide-field cameras are being used in monitoring the sky for various scientific research and known as hemispherical, whole sky or all-sky cameras. These cameras have a field of view 180º which is a unique advantage, thus any activity in the sky can be recorded optically. Ground based all-sky cameras are frequently used in meteor detection, extra solar planet detection and gamma ray bursts detection in the astronomy field. In atmospheric physics the all-sky cameras are being used in monitoring cloud formation, measuring solar irradiance levels and for confirming satellite weather data. These cameras are used in security and defense for monitoring, locating intruding aircrafts and drones.

MedBot_Robot for Covid19

A prototype unmanned wheeled robot is developed to assist hospitals to deliver medicines and foods to patients remotely. The robot consists of two motor drive wheels, a controller, an audio-visual patient’s communication system, a frame with a top-plate to hold foods/medicine etc, a camera, a graphical user interface (WIFI router/ connection computer and smart phone will be provided by the user). The robot can be controlled by using the GUI installed in the smart phone as an App following the guidance given by the computer monitor. The user/ doctor will be able instruct and monitor patient remotely.

MEDICUS+: Robot for Remote Patient Monitoring and Real Time Communication: Department of Electrical and Information Engineering, Faculty of Engineering at University of Ruhuna has developed a medical robot which will allow for doctors to remotely diagnose patients using temperature, heart rate, blood oxygen and ECG, with two way audio-video communication.
